The Earthquake Fault is a nearly straight fracture that cuts through volcanic rock, formed by tectonic stresses in the Earth's crust. Measuring up to 10 feet wide and 60 feet deep, it aligns with the Inyo-Mono Craters and contributes to the widening of the Basin and Range region. The age of the fissure is uncertain, but the presence of trees around 160 years old suggests its age. The fissure presents the possibility of future magma eruption or gradual debris filling. In the winter, snow can persist in the fissure, and local Native Indians once used it as a food storage area. A short walking trail surrounds the fissure, offering a scenic spot for picnics among majestic trees.
