Best of Mammoth

Valentine’s Day is this weekend! And if you’re planning on treating your significant other to a romantic getaway in the mountains, then hey, you’re already doing way better than a generic card and bouquet of flowers.

But, if you really want to wow your partner, you’ll also want to consider what kinds of lovey-dovey activities you’ll do once you’re here. In this article, we’re covering a few fun, creative date ideas to try during your vacation in Mammoth Lakes.

Oh and by the way, the entire month of February is the month of love so there’s still time to book that romantic getaway with Mammoth Mountain Reservations!

A day on the mountain

Okay, maybe this one was a no-brainer. After all, the conditions on the mountain this weekend are expected to be absolutely epic. But, there are a few ways to make your Valentine’s Day shred sesh even more romantic, like:

  • Wear matching Valentine’s Day outfits. Who cares if it’s corny? Duct tape red hearts to your helmets, wrap your ski poles with red ribbon, wear a pink tutu over your snowboard pants. Not only will it be easier for you two lovebirds to keep track of each other on the slopes, but you’ll also make everyone else on the mountain smile.

  • Slopeside bingo. If you want to add a competitive element to your romantic day on the mountain, consider putting together a game of bingo (there are a ton of free Bingo generators online to choose from.) The categories can include things like “smooch on the chair lift” or “take a couple’s selfie without the other person noticing” or whatever else you and your partner would enjoy. Whoever fills out their bingo card first can collect their prize in the form of hot chocolate (or a beer) at the end of the day.

  • Chair lift music video. This has become something of a trend on Tiktok, and we think it makes an excellent idea for Valentine’s Day. The concept is simple. You and your partner will pick a cute lovey song and then make a music video during your day on the mountain. The easiest way to do it is to have one person play the song on their phone and the other person record the two of you singing or dancing. Make sure to do it in shorter clips so that you can incorporate different backgrounds and parts of the day. Remember that safety is important, here! Stay aware of your surroundings and don’t go too crazy with the dance moves on the chair lift.

Snowshoe

Shredding the gnar is fun, but you might be looking for something a little bit more low-key for a Valentine’s Day date. Snowshoeing is the perfect activity for enjoying nature while also being able to enjoy each other’s company.

There are so many different areas to snowshoe around Mammoth Lakes. If you’re looking for a flat, easy route, check out the trail system around Shady Rest Park. Or, if you’re looking for more of a challenge, consider snowshoeing in the Lakes Basin or up to Minaret Vista.

And, don’t forget that this is quality time! So you might want to come with a list of conversation topics like, “Would you still love me if I was a worm” or “What is your favorite thing about me?” or “Which one of us is right more often?” You know, romantic questions that are totally reasonable and definitely won’t start an argument.

Ice skating

No matter what skill level you are, ice skating will never not be goofy, romantic, and fun.

In February, your best option for ice skating in Mammoth Lakes is to head to the LA Kings Ice Rink on Old Mammoth Road. This NHL-sized fully covered indoor rink offers public skating sessions as well as skate classes and competitive training programs.

If the conditions are just right, you may also be able to find frozen Sierra lakes where you can bring your own ice skates. But, with the snow on the forecast (and the fact that we wouldn’t really recommend ice skating on frozen lakes for safety reasons), we’d say, stick with the official rink.

Spa treatment

After a long day of winter activities, you and your partner can unwind with a relaxing, romantic spa treatment. There are a few options around town for professional massages, including  Simply Massage Body Boutique, Healing Arts Centre, Double Eagle Spa at Snowcreek and more. Many masseuses in town offer a sports massage option, which is great if you’re feeling a little bit creaky after being on the mountain all day.

How about if you’re interested in a spa experience without the massage? No worries! When you book a condo through Mammoth Mountain Reservations, you’ll be within walking distance to a luxurious hot tub (and a sauna in certain locations!)

Now, if you like the idea of a natural hot tub and you’re willing to go a bit off the beaten path, make sure that you visit the natural hot springs off of the 395. This collection of geothermal springs allows you to soak in warm natural pools with some truly spectacular views. We would recommend going during the day so that you can take in the sights and get some cute couple’s pictures.

Take a class at the Clay Corner

We love a Valentine’s Day date that allows you to leave with your very own Mammoth Lakes souvenir. And this is exactly what you can expect from a class at the Clay Corner. Conveniently located in the Vons shopping area, the Clay Corner is a cozy space for creative couples to learn handbuilding or wheelthrowing pottery. No prior experience is necessary.

At the end of the class, staff members will take care of firing your pieces so that you can enjoy them as keepsakes from your very special Valentine’s. Finished pieces are typically available 4 to 6 weeks after the class, and you can arrange with the staff to have your items shipped.

Romantic dinner

Mammoth is filled with dining options for whatever Valentine's vibe you and your special someone are looking for. Want something casual and fun? Head to Roberto’s for some spicy margaritas. Looking to treat your partner to something more formal and gourmet? Make sure to book a table at Lakefront Restaurant at Twin Lakes or Skadi on Main Street.

This weekend tends to be quite busy, so make sure you plan ahead and make reservations at your favorite romantic dinner spot!

We’ll see you two love birds up here!
